Programme Overview

Medical Imaging is concerned with diagnostic procedures, health screening and research, using sophisticated and ever-evolving technology of equipments, such as general radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasonography. . Medical images of the human body are produced, to aid diagnosis and treatment planning. Diagnostic radiographers are important players of the healthcare team, to deliver a sensitive and patient-centred service using these specialised equipment. A more specialised radiographers may work in different modalities such as fluoroscopy, mammography, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology. The prospect of medical imaging not only revolves in the clinical area, but expands to research, administration and education.

Bachelor of Medical Imaging (Hons) is a four-year program that prepares the graduate to be a professionally competent diagnostic radiographer. The curriculum is developed with close consultation with the clinical industry, tallies closely with the needs and demands in the current trends in the clinical practice of radiology. The modules delivered not only purposed to equip the graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills, but also to train them in achieving the highest interpersonal capacities, as well as critical thinking and decision thinking skills. 

Career Opportunity

Graduates of this course may grow as a professional radiographer, supervise every facilities and equipment under care and conduct quality assurance procedure.  Non-clinical professions of this course may include lecturer (education), modality application specialist and coordinate identified research activities by preparing resources for literature review, research methodology and presenting the finding of the research.

For 2023, KPJ offers a lot of opportunities for Scholarship for Bachelor of Medical Imaging in the form of Biasiswa by Merit and Dermasiswa based on Financial Need that reflects our commitment in grooming future professionals and leaders in the healthcare sector.  With the combination of PTPTN loan and our Scholarship, many students may not need to pay any tuition or fee during their studies and in addition will receive Pocket Money of RM200 per month. To ensure smooth clinical training at our 27 KPJ Specialist Hospitals, we provide Free-of-Charge (FOC) off-campus accommodation for all Bachelor students throughout their study as well as their 1st year on-campus accommodation in Nilai.

Malaysian students:

  • Obtained Malaysia University English Test (MUET) Band 3 or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (5.5) / Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 550 AND
  • Pass Matriculation / Pre-University / STPM programme or equivalent qualification with a minimum GPA 2.33 in TWO of the following subjects: (Biology, Physics / Mathematics, Chemistry) OR
  • A-level programme or equivalent qualification with minimum Grade D in TWO of the following subjects (Biology, Physics / Mathematics Chemistry) OR
  • Recognized Diploma with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.75 in a related field;

PROGRAMME DETAILS

This course is to study of human anatomy, physiology and associated medical terminology. The primary component of this course involves the foundation study of the structure and function of the human body with emphasis on the gross and micrscopic anatomy . Topics for the course include cells, tissues, organs, the the skeleton, the joints, the muscular system and the nervous system.

This course enables students to understand the basic concept of physics applicable to the medical imaging field. It also covers production of x-ray and interactions between x-ray and matter

This course introduces students to the design, construction and materials of a general x-ray unit, It also covers topics such as mains supply to the equipment, accessories, x-ray tube and basic circuitries and principles of fluoroscopy.

This course provides the students with basic concepts of patient care, including consideration for the physical and psychological needs of the patient and family. Routine and emergency patient care procedures are described, as well as infection control procedures using standard precautions. The role of the radiographer in patient education is also identified.

This is a continuation of course Anatomy and Physiology I. The topics covered include those of the body system not covered in the previous course, for instance the gross and microscopic features physiology of the autonomic nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the endocrine system, the respiratory system, the digestive system and metabolism, the lymphatic system and immune response, the urinary system and the reproductive system. Some aspects of development and inheritance are also covered in this course. This course will provide students with the basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the body systems and will enable them to apply this knowledge to other related courses.

This course is designed to present an overview of the radiobiology principles and ionising radiation effects, principles of radiation protection, including the responsibilities of the radiographer for patients, personnel and the public in radiographic procedures. Radiation health and safety requirements of regulatory agencies and legal system are incorporated.

This course is the study about the various radiographic equipments commonly found in a diagnostic department. Students will learn about the design and components of the equipment in the syllabus

This course is designed to provide the knowledge base necessary to perform standard imaging procedures. Consideration is given to the evaluation of optimal diagnostic images.

This course is designed to establish knowledge in basic imaging process. This course will highlight in the principles of imaging process such as films, intensifying screens, photochemistry and processing equipments in the dark room.

This course introduces students to psychological theories and principles in areas pertaining to health and well-being. It also examines the theoretical and empirical contributions of psychology to the promotion and maintenance of health and the prevention and treatment of illness. Major stages of human development is also emphasized in relation to the general well-being.

This course provides students with a basic understanding of pathology and body defense mechanisms. Topics covered include infection and inflammation, cell necrosis, etiology of the various diseases and radiographic appearances.

The main focus of this course is on the technical factors and physical principles affecting the quality of radiographic images. Lectures involved will be on quality criteria of the radiographic images of chest, abdomen, KUB, skeletal system, skull, vertebral column and special examination of the alimentary, biliary, urinary, cardiovascular and reproductive system

This module covers the principles of digital radiography and computer radiography which includes digital fluoroscopy, digital subtraction and digital image quality. Students learnt on CT principles and components, advantages and limitations of CT. Image acquisition techniques and post processing methods are also highlighted in this course. Bone/ tissue densitometric equipment is also discussed.

This course is a continuation from Imaging Procedure I, which is to provide the knowledge base necessary to perform standard imaging procedures. Content is designed to establish knowledge and skill in every topic including anatomy of the projection, technique of the projection, modification technique, patient management and radiation protection for staff and to the patient

Content is designed to provide an overview of the foundations in radiography and the practitioner’s role in the health care delivery system. Principles, practices and policies of the healthcare organization(s) are examined and discussed in addition to the professional responsibilities of the radiographer.

The students will be practicing in an imaging department in hospitals under the direct supervision of hospital radiographers and KPJUC lecturers. The students will continue to gain experience on chest, abdomen, upper and lower extremity and shoulder girdle while continuing to develop the necessary skills and competency needed to work in any imaging department.

The students will work in a hospital imaging department under the direct supervision of a hospital radiographer and KPJUC lecturers. The students will continue to gain radiographic and experience in special procedures while continue to develop thinking and scientific skills, and communication skills needed in any imaging department.

The students will be practicing in hospital imaging department under the guidance of lecturers and direct supervision of an on-site radiographer. The students will continue to gain various experience on basic and special radiographic procedures while continue to develop effective communication skills, information management and lifelong learning.

This course provides the students with the knowledge and communication skills that is necessary to perform standard imaging procedures, including basic interventional procedures and special studies (vascular). Consideration is given to the evaluation of optimal diagnostic images with higher order thinking skills and scientific skills.

This course provides detailed coverage of procedures for CT imaging which includes indications for the procedure, patient education, preparation, orientation and positioning, patient history and assessment, contrast media usage, scout image, selectable scan parameters, filming and archiving of the images.

Content is designed to provide the students with an introductory level course for learning cross sectional anatomy and to prepare the students to adjust to the higher level of understanding required for sectional anatomy, each chapter begins with an anatomic overview.

This course introduces the principles of management and administration, departmental design and organization, professionalism, ethics and legal implications and quality management applied to the medical imaging department.

This course includes both qualitative and quantitative approaches to research. The focus is to introduce students to the core elements of the research process and in the development of competence in the critical appraisal and evaluation of nursing and health related research. Bio statistical concepts and techniques are useful for researchers who will be doing research in medicine or public health. Another area of statistics involves determining whether a relationship between two or more numerical or quantitative variables exists. In this subject student will be taught about the different statistical methods and various types of graphical presentations.

This course introduces the students to the details of both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Students are required to develop a research proposal in the form of a small research study into health or nursing-related issue. The selection, development and implementation of each student project are carried out in consultation with a specified academic supervisor. The students are required to comprehensively review the literature, develop a research design and prepare a research proposal.

This course content is designed to provide radiography students with principles and components related to ultrasound. Advantages and limitations of ultrasound are highlighted and emphasis is also given to patient management, regular monitoring and safety checks for ultrasound equipment.

This course content is designed to provide radiography students with principles and components related to MR imaging. Advantages and limitations of MR are highlighted and emphasis is also given to safety regulations for patients and staff.

This course introduces students to the basic knowledge and skills in mammography to enable them to develop professional clinical competence. The module covers the imaging techniques and protocols, instrumentation, radiographic anatomy and pathology in mammography. Emphasis is also given on special designs and characteristics of the dedicated mammographic unit, patient management, QAP and QC in mammography.

Content is designed to impart an understanding of the components, principles and operation of digital imaging systems found in diagnostic radiology. Factors that impact image acquisition, display, archiving and retrieval are discussed.

This course will assist the student to understand the imaging techniques and protocols, instrumentation, image evaluation and interpretation in radionuclide imaging. Particular attention will be on the radiopharmaceutical preparation and administration, radiation safety and hazards, disease detection, limitation and comparison with other modalities.

This course will assist the student to understand the imaging techniques and protocols, instrumentation, image evaluation and interpretation in ultrasound imaging.

This course content provides the student with imaging techniques related to the central nervous system (CNS), neck, thorax, musculoskeletal system and abdomino pelvic regions. The content covers specific clinical application, coils that are available and their use, considerations in the scan sequences, specific choices in the protocols (e.g., slice thickness, phase direction and flow compensation), and positioning criteria. Anatomical structures and the plane that best demonstrates anatomy are discussed as well as signal characteristics of normal and abnormal structures

This course is designed to impart an understanding of the underlying principles of digital image formation and its related technical aspects, their applications in medical imaging. Students will be exposed to the current trends in image processing with respect to particular imaging modalities.

This course is designed to develop foundation knowledge and skills in evidence based practice. It provides guidelines to approach clinical situations and the ability to use the most efficient strategy to assess specific questions for an individual patient directed by evidence-based guidelines. The course will cover on how to establish a systematic review on topic of interest

This course introduces the students to the dissertation/project. The development of selected project are carried out in consultation with a specified academic supervisor. The students are required to comprehensively review the literature, analyse the data obtained, develop and prepare a dissertation/project.

The students will be practicing in an imaging department in hospitals under the direct supervision of hospital radiographers and the KPJUC lecturers. The students will continue to gain experience on radiographic and special procedures while continuing to develop the necessary skills and competency needed to work in any imaging department
