Occupational Therapy is a healthcare professional work with individuals, families, and health related organisations to assist them to overcome the limitations and restrictions that are caused by illness, psychological or emotional difficulties, developmental delay or the effects of aging. Occupational therapist will  enhance people ability to engage in the occupations and empowering people to participate in  everyday life.

The KPJUC gives you a high-quality academic education and clinical intensive at the KPJ group of Hospitals. You will learn from highly competence and experienced Occupational Therapist who are skilled in occupations related care, education and research. You will acquire the knowledge and skills you need to practice as a Occupational Therapist, using a combination of traditional and scenario-based learning and teaching methods. The curriculum incorporates knowledge from the disciplines of occupational science, biomedical, behavioural and social sciences.

Students then develop and apply this knowledge to the assessment and intervention processes used by occupational therapists when working with clients and client groups. The Fieldwork education in various practice settings will provide further opportunities to apply knowledge, skills and developing appreciation of occupational therapy related health care and service delivery. This clinical training will be conducted at the KPJ group of hospitals.

Financing your Study

For 2023, KPJ offers a lot of opportunities for Scholarship for Bachelor of Occupational Therapy in the form of Biasiswa by Merit and Dermasiswa based on Financial Need that reflects our commitment in grooming future professionals and leaders in the healthcare sector.  With the combination of PTPTN loan and our Scholarship, many students may not need to pay any tuition or fee during their studies and in addition will receive Pocket Money of RM200 per month. To ensure smooth clinical training at our 27 KPJ Specialist Hospitals, we provide Free-of-Charge (FOC) off-campus accommodation for all Bachelor students throughout their study as well as their 1st year on-campus accommodation in Nilai.

Malaysian students:

  • Obtained Malaysia University English Test (MUET) Band 3 or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (5.5) / Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 550 AND
  • Pass Matriculation / Pre-University / STPM programme or equivalent qualification with a minimum GPA 2.33 in TWO of the following subjects: (Biology, Physics / Mathematics, Chemistry) OR
  • A-level programme or equivalent qualification with minimum Grade D in TWO of the following subjects (Biology, Physics / Mathematics, Chemistry) OR

Introducing to broad overview with an emphasis on the scope of OT, OT process, team process, professional issues, and current trends. Introduces the concepts of occupational therapy as a means of directing a person’s participation in tasks selected to develop, maintain or restore skills in daily living..

Understand about general concepts of pharmacology, it uses and side effects on various human body systems. It covers the interaction of pharmacology effects on human body systems with occupational therapy interventions.

This course introduces basic knowledge for the student to understand human anatomy and physiology that can be applied to other subjects in the occupational therapy course

The basic concepts of pathological changes following inflammation, injury, tissue healing process and various medical disorders. It covers the classification of microorganism, different type of tumors, infection process, and principles of prevention on communicable disease.

A study of assessments utilized by occupational therapist to determine the performance issues in clients with orthopaedic and surgical conditions. This course will equip students with skills and ability to administer and interpret the result of some standardised assessment commonly used to determine the functional outcome of patient with orthopaedic and surgical conditions

This course offer a wide range of materials, tools, devices and the techniques of designing devices that will assist in supporting affected bodily parts, correcting musculoskeletal deformities, preventing further deformities and facilitating optimal function.

The course will cover from aspect of aetiology, diagnostic procedure, pathology, signs and symptoms, medical management, involvement of interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team and prognostic criteria

Emphasis on manual handling posture movement (in sitting, standing, walking, pulling, pushing, lifting and transporting). Risk management; Prevention of injuries; design and redesign workstation, adapting tools and equipment and finally on enhancement of work safety, work quality and productivity.

Students will be introducing to the classification of psychiatric disorders generally applied in psychiatric medicine. This will be followed by explaining about each psychiatric disorders commonly occurred and general management or treatment for each disorders, which may related Occupational Therapy treatment in psychiatric rehabilitation.

Clinical evaluation which is the process of systematically observing the characteristics of individuals with psychiatric illness. Client evaluation is an integral part where occupational therapist plans an individual treatment program based on the results of testing.

Occupational Therapy practice in psychiatric rehabilitation, mental health and developmental disability in adolescence and adulthood.

Evaluate the capability, types of adaptive equipment and modification of environment for disabled people in driving. The student will be able to make precise judgment on the safety and ability of the client and for the safety of the pedestrian. Emphasise on work assessment, work programme, industrial rehabilitation, job evaluation and analysis, work hardening and work conditioning programme, physical demands analysis, physical abilities analysis, building occupational health and rehabilitation programme, work resettlement, occupational related injuries and psychological aspect of work.

It covers the legislation aspect, various occupational hazards, classification of risks, principles of prevention and hierarchy of control, and musculoskeletal work related disorders and injuries. The students will be learned the occupational hygiene principles in occupational health and safety issues at the work place.

This course introduces students to the issues in assessment and planning in Occupational Therapy. The aim is to develop specific skills, knowledge, skills and attitude concerning assessment issues in Occupational Therapy.

Introduces students to the practice of occupational therapy with selected diagnostic categories in paediatric fields. It addresses dysfunction in children’s through various specific adjunctive therapies, specific approaches and techniques, purposeful activities, treatment principles and practices.

Describe different types of disabilities children in special education stream. In addition, to understand current issues and factors in special education that relate to Malaysia context

Various paediatric conditions which can be congenital or acquired. They will understand how this pathology will interfere with the development or performance context of the child.

Explains about Occupational Therapy practice with elderly. Through this subject, students will be exposed to the current issues regarding elderly and common conditions affecting the life of elderly. Students also will be exposed to the latest treatments for elderly in various setting and various conditions

Introduce students on functions of a manager, including those of a planner, director, organizer, budgeter, supervisor and leader. Being a manager is a role that many occupational therapists assume, by providing information on the functions of a manager and foster the enjoyment and importance of this role

An introduction to the educational framework of teaching activities. This knowledge will be utilized to plan, design, prepare, carryout and evaluate a health educational task in the health care service. The means by which needs are determined for promotional or educational activities, along with its audience, will be established.

Qualitative and quantitative approaches to research. The focus is to introduce students to the core elements of the research process and in the development of competence in the critical appraisal and evaluation of nursing and health related research. Bio statistical concepts and techniques are useful for researchers who will be doing research in medicine or public health

Understand about the evidence based knowledge and its relation to the occupational therapy practices. It covers the various steps and knowledge on finding and assessing the evidence, critically appraisal the evidence and used available evidence into clinical practices

Category of community based rehabilitation (CBR), implementation of the community based rehabilitation (CBR), management of the community based rehabilitation (CBR) and how OT role in community based rehabilitation (CBR).

Both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Students are required to develop a research proposal in the form of a small research study into health-related issue. The selection, development and implementation of each student project are carried out in consultation with a specified academic supervisor.

During this placement, the student has to complete all areas of the occupational therapy fields and process. The task includes observation of clinical cases and the occupational therapy management process.
