Programme Overview

Diploma in Health Information Management is a 3–year programme designed to develop competencies in the area of Health and Medical Information Management. Students will learn relevant practices especially in the function of ICD-10 Disease and Procedure Coding in Case-Mix System to support critical needs and complement the dynamic healthcare service requirements. Student will also be given relevant materials to enhance the use of World-wide reference book, i.e. International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) to specialize in. Extensively this programme aims for students to experience real world practices in Medical Record Department by attending practical posting every semester in our 26 selected KPJ Specialist Hospitals. Through strategic collaboration with Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) students are to attend mandatory training sessions and will obtain ICD-10 Certification. Many of our academics are wealth in industry experience in their chosen fields and their skills are up to date which reflects good results in student.

Career Opportunity

Diploma Health Information Management offers a great opportunity to work at KPJ Healthcare Group as well as in Government and Private Hospitals in Malaysia and abroad. The positions offered are Medical Record Officer/Health Information Officer (Clinical Coder), Insurance Coder, Marketing Officer, and Information Officer. Diploma graduates may also choose to further their Degree programmes in Healthcare Information System or Information Systems in General.

Financing your Study

For 2023, KPJ offers a lot of opportunities for Scholarship in the form of Biasiswa by Merit or Dermasiswa based on Financial Need. With the combination of PTPTN and our Scholarship, many students may not need to pay any tuition or fee during their studies and will receive Pocket Money of RM200 per month, plus hostel accommodation for the whole duration of 3 years of your study which is readily included in the tuition and fee. Please refer the following Table for an indication of how much you will actually need to pay or will receive for your study. This calculation is based on the condition that you, like almost all our present students, are approved and receive PTPTN to pay for your tuition and fee. We would help you to apply for PTPTN during your orientation week.

PROGRAMME DETAILS

This course is designed to equip students with foundation skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will be exposed to the strategies in effective listening and speaking; parts of speech, simple tenses, and the structure of 5-paragraph essay focusing on cause-effect genre.

This course discusses about the introduction to basic hardware and software components of the computer systems and continues to some primary areas of information technology. Students will gain hands-on experience in working with MS Windows, some basic tools like word processing and spreadsheets, provides hands-on training on Internet and web technology.

This course is offered at introductory level to student pursuing healthcare related program. The content covered in the course will provide basic understanding on the structure and basic functions of the Malaysian Health System which would be able to facilitate adequate understanding and application in specific discipline of study related to healthcare environment.

This course designed for students with majors/minors in the sciences or related disciplines to provide the student with an in-depth study of the anatomy and physiology (structure and function) of the human body, pathological diseases and conditions and related treatments and procedures.

This course designed for students with majors/minors in the sciences or related disciplines to provide the student with study of the anatomy and physiology of human body, pathological diseases and conditions and related treatments and procedures. Student will be able to applied medical science knowledge to generate medical terminology and abbreviation related to the healthcare information system.

This introductory practical attachment provides opportunity to student in strengthening their understanding of the operation of the assigned healthcare facility in general as well as the functions, processes and systems of the health information/ medical record services, health data gathering on rotational basis in the out-patient clinic, Emergency department, and in-patient units.

This course is designed to equip students with basic of English language skills and develop communicative competence in spoken and written English, particularly in preparation for tertiary study and employment. Student will learn about verbal communication focusing on Standard People’s Practice. Additionally, student would be able to inculcate values and professionalism and apply problem solving skills in everyday scenarios.

This module is compiled and designed to facilitate the requisite orientation and self-learning on efficient use of ICD-10. It covers a part of the chapters contained in WHO’s publication on ICD-10.

This second hospital placement provides opportunity to student in the application of knowledge related to Coding Principles and processes. Students will be reviewing patient’s case note and familiarizing with medical terminologies and service/treatment flow received by individual patients. Utilizing coding principles and knowledge students are provided with guidance in the identifying and allocating appropriate basic disease and procedure codes

This course is designed to equip students with reading, writing and speaking skills in different context for future higher level courses. Students will also learn about writing compare contrast essay and opinion essay. Grammar and vocabulary are also included in this course in order to help students in their writing and speaking.

This module is compiled and designed to facilitate the requisite orientation and self-learning on efficient use of ICD-10. It covers a part of the chapters contained in WHO’s publication on ICD-10.

This course is designed for students to gain knowledge and develop competency in the use of ICD-9-CM for Procedure Coding; understanding the Case-Mix System in relation to clinical coding.

This course provides a definition and purpose of the patient record, an overview of a valuable tool that documents care and treatment of the patient, the use of informed consent and also addressed the differences between computerized patient records, electronic patient records, and electronic health records.

This course aims to enable the students to develop a basic understanding of the concepts and applications of a range of communication skills and apply these in an education context. Students who complete this course would be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and a range of situations appropriate to their personal, cultural and professional needs.

This third hospital placement provides the opportunity for students to apply knowledge related to Coding Principles and processes of a more complex case notes. Utilizing coding principles and knowledge, students are provided with guidance in identifying and allocating appropriate advance disease and procedure codes which refers to the statistical distribution of patients according to their utilization of resources.

This module is compiled and designed to facilitate the requisite orientation and self-learning on efficient use of ICD-10. It covers a part of the chapters contained in WHO’s publication on ICD-10.

This course is designed for students to gain knowledge and develop competency in the use of ICD-9-CM for Procedure Coding; understanding the Case-Mix System in relation to clinical coding.

This course introduce the students to the management of paper-based medical and health records, the departmental health record systems that contribute to the EHR, the principles of computer technology related to health care with emphasis on security arrangement as well as the legal requirements governing management and ethical principles in handling personal and health information/records of clients.

This fourth hospital placement provides categorization of patients into groups primarily by diagnosis and determine the hospital’s case-mix, which refers to the statistical distribution of patients according to their utilization of resources. It is the tracking of utilization of resources through case-mix analysis that helps administrative personnel to do long range planning and to evaluate quality measures.

This course ensures students able to enumerate the importance of research in the development of health care. The student will conduct a small research based on the proposal approved. The student will work with group members and will be assigned to a lecturer who will act as their research supervisors.

This course is design for students to gain knowledge and develop competency in the use of case-mix system in relation to clinical coding.

This course is designed to provide students with knowledge and understanding on marketing and customer services in relation to Health Information. The customer to be addressed includes the internal customers as well as the patients and related stakeholders with various needs and expectations. Students will be exposed to problem-based learning through analysis and short cases scenarios in hospital environments.

The scope of this course is to provide awareness on the 8 elements of Health Economics scenario such as what is health and what is its value, what influence health, the demand for health, the supply of health, micro-economic evaluation at treatment level, health market equilibrium, evaluation at whole system level, and planning, budgeting and monitoring mechanism

This course utilized the basic management principles to the practice of the Medical Record Management Standard which include Organizational and Management, human Resource Development and Management, policies and Procedure, facilities and Equipment, Safety and Quality Improvement activity.
