Programme Overview

Diploma in Medical Imaging is a three-year program that prepares the graduate to be a professionally competent diagnostic radiographer. The development of curriculum balances between theoretical and practical knowledge in the university campus, campus labs and our 28 KPJ Specialist Hospitals with state-of-the-art facilities, with an up-to-date imaging modalities. This training program is hoped to empower the graduates to be highly competent in their clinical skills holistically.

Medical Imaging is concerned with diagnostic procedures, health screening and research, using sophisticated and ever-evolving technology of equipments, such as general radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasonography. . Medical images of the human body are produced, to aid diagnosis and treatment planning. Diagnostic radiographers are important players of the healthcare team, to deliver a sensitive and patient-centred service using these specialised equipment. A more specialised radiographers may work in different modalities such as fluoroscopy, mammography, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology. The prospect of medical imaging not only revolves in the clinical area, but expands to research, administration and education.

Career Opportunity

Graduates of this course may grow as a radiologic technicians, or specialise in a particular area of medical radiography to become radiation technologists. Non-clinical professions of this course may include clinical instructor (education), modality application specialist and researchers.

Financing your Study

For 2023, KPJ offers a lot of opportunities for Scholarship in the form of Biasiswa by Merit or Dermasiswa based on Financial Need that reflects our commitment in grooming future professionals and leaders in the healthcare sector. With the combination of PTPTN and our Scholarship, many students may not need to pay any tuition or fee during their studies and instead will receive Pocket Money of RM200 per month, plus hostel accommodation for the whole duration of 3 years of your study which is readily included in the tuition and fee. Please refer the following Table for an indication of how much you will actually need to pay or will receive for your study. This calculation is based on the condition that you, like almost all our present students, are approved and receive PTPTN to pay for your tuition and fee. We would help you to apply for PTPTN during your orientation week.

 i)  SPM or equivalent with PASS in Bahasa Malaysia and English and 5 credits in the following subjects:

  • Mathematics;
  • ONE science subject (Biology/Physics/Chemistry/General Science/Applied Science); AND
  • Any other THREE subjects (including Bahasa Malaysia and/or English). OR

ii) GCE/O Level or equivalent with PASS in Bahasa Malaysia or English and 5 Grade C in the following subjects:

This course is designed to equip students with foundation skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will be exposed to the strategies in effective listening and speaking; parts of speech, simple tenses, and the structure of 5-paragraph essay focusing on cause-effect genre.

Kursus ini membincangkan Sejarah dan Politik, Perlembagaan Malaysia, Sistem dan Struktur Pentadbiran Negara, Kemasyarakatan dan Perpaduan dan Pembangunan Negara dan Agama Kepercayaan. Kursus ini adalah bertujuan untuk melahirkan graduan yang mempunyai identiti kebangsaan dan semangat patriotisme yang unggul. Pengajaran dan pembelajaran akan dilaksanakan dalam bentuk kuliah, tugasan, peperiksaan dan pengalaman pembelajaran.

This course is designed for students with majors/minors in the science of related disciplines. This course will provide the students with an in-depth study of the anatomy and physiology (structure and function) of the human body. Both normal and pathological conditions are emphasized.

This course will enable the students to understand the basic concept of physics applicable to the medical imaging field including energy, electric and electronic, electromagnetism and their importance in radiology.

This course introduces students to psychological theories and principles in areas pertaining to health and well-being. It also examines the theoretical and empirical contributions of psychology to the promotion and maintenance of health and the prevention and treatment of illness. Major stages of human development are also emphasized in relation to the general well-being.

This course is aimed to provide the knowledge and techniques on the basic and additional radiographic projections of chest, abdomen, upper extremities, shoulder girdle, lower extremities and pelvic girdle.

This course will provide students basic concepts of patient care, including consideration for the physical and psychological needs of the patient and family. Routine and emergency patient care procedures are described, as well as infection control procedures using standard precautions. The role of the radiographer in patient education is identified.

This course is designed to equip students with the basics of English language skills and develop communicative competence in spoken and written English, particularly in preparation for tertiary study and employment. Students will learn about verbal communication focusing on Standard People’s Practice. Additionally, students would be able to inculcate values and professionalism and apply problem solving skills in everyday scenarios.

This course is designed for students to understand the principle of radiation physics including atomic structure, type of radiations, X-ray production and interactions and also radiation detectors.

This course is to provide the knowledge on the principle of imaging process, recording apparatus, radiographic and image quality. Also knowledge on the automatic processor, darkroom and principle of digital imaging including computed radiography, storage and archiving process-PACS.

This course is aimed to provide the knowledge on the basic and additional radiographic projections of bony thorax, vertebral column, skull and facial bones; and including modified radiographic projections during mobile and trauma radiography.

The students will be practicing in an imaging department in hospitals under the direct supervision of hospital radiographers and the KPJUC lecturers. The students will continue to gain experience on general radiographic and additional procedures while continuing to develop the necessary skills and competency needed to work in any imaging department.

This course is developed to equip students with reading, writing, and speaking skills in different context for future higher level courses. Students will also learn about writing compare contrast essay and opinion essay. Grammar and vocabulary are also included in this course in order to help students in their writing and speaking.

This course provides students with basic knowledge about the process of decision-making skills and behaviors wisely and efficiently. This includes giving students an understanding of some decision-making approach based on decision-making models selected. Aspects that influence decision-making as a value, needs and goals as well as an element of uncertainty are also discussed. In addition, religion and religious factors, experience, environment, cognitive, psychological, ethical and individual personalities also are taken into account in decision making.

This course is designed to present an overview of the radiobiology principles and ionizing radiation effects, principles of radiation protection, including the responsibilities of the radiographer for patients, personnel and the public in radiographic procedures. Radiation health and safety requirements of regulatory agencies and legal system are also incorporated in the course

This module covers the procedures involving the use of contrast agents in vascular and non-vascular approaches.

This course will provide the students with a basic understanding of pathology and the radiological appearance of common diseases, that can be applied to other courses in the imaging course.

This module is designed to present an overview of the basic principles and features of specialized equipments such as mammography and fluoroscopy, equipment characteristics and applications of non-ionizing modalities, including ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging as well as functions of a contrast media injection in vascular imaging equipment.

This course discusses the concept of community engagement projects, preparation of proposal papers and effective project features. The purpose of the course is to provide understanding and appreciation in implementing community engagement projects. Teaching and learning will be conducted in the form of interactive lectures, group discussions, experiential learning through group activities and volunteerism. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to practice values and ethics, leadership and teamwork as well as social responsibilities.

This course introduces the principles of management and administration, with focus on plan, organize, lead and control, change management and also communication skills in related with healthcare services

This module covers the procedures involving forensic, dental, soft tissue, mammography, paediatric and geriatric radiography.

This course provides detailed coverage of procedures for CT imaging which includes indications for the procedure, patient education, preparation, orientation and positioning, patient history and assessment, contrast media usage, scout image, selectable scan parameters, filming and archiving of the images.

This subject covers the relevant topics in patient care, procedures and techniques in modern imaging modalities via fluoroscopy and digital subtraction angiography (DSA), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound (US), nuclear medicine (NM), digital imaging; and aims in the application of these modalities in clinical diagnosis.

The students will be practicing in an imaging department in hospitals under the direct supervision of hospital radiographers and the KPJUC lecturers. The students will continue to gain experience on modified general radiography, specialised radiography and computed tomographic procedures while continuing to develop the necessary skills and competency needed to work in any imaging department.

The students will continue to gain more experience in catheterisation, maxillofacial radiography and bone densitometry procedures while continuing to develop the necessary skills and competency needed to work in any imaging department.
