Programme Overview

The Master of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care is a full-time, 4 years clinical training programme aimed to impart knowledge and skills to candidates, enabling them to function as safe and competent Anaesthesiologist. Candidates will be trained to have the basic specialist skill in the administration of anaesthesia, competent in handling acute critical situation, resuscitation and carry out all the duties expected of a clinical consultant. The training is conducted at accredited Department of Anaesthesiology, KPJ Specialist hospitals. The programme provides competency-based training featuring one-to-one, hands-on apprenticeship with supervision by dedicated and experienced KPJ anaesthesiology consultants. Although the majority of training will be conducted at KPJ Specialist Hospitals, special arrangement will be made to enable candidates to have the opportunities to attend academic programmes and clinical training at teaching hospitals of public universities and Ministry of Health hospitals, especially for subspecialty training not available in KPJ Specialist Hospital.

This programme received provisional accreditation by the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) to commence in December 2022. It will be conducted in accordance to the standards set by Specialty Board of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care. Accreditation process by MQA will be conducted 4 years after commencement, to ensure full accreditation and recognition of the programme by Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Malaysian Students:

  • Possess a Medical Degree (Level 6 MQF) (MD, MBBS and MBChB) or equivalent qualifications from Universities recognized by the Senate of the University College.
  • Must be registered for medical practice by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and possess a valid Annual Practicing Certificate (APC)
  • At least 3 years experience of clinical practice/training after obtaining medical degree at the time of entry in to the programme
  • At least one year experience in anaesthesiology at commencement of the course
  • Obtained satisfactory mark (band) in the Medical Specialist Pre-Entrance Examination (MedEx – Anaesthesiology).
  • Satisfactory performance at the selection interview conducted by KPJ University College and KPJ Specialist Hospital.
  • Favourable reports from 3 referees

International Students:

  • Possess a valid Practising Certificate in the country of origin.
  • Registerable with the Malaysian Medical Council for Temporary Practicing Certificate (TPC)
  • Proficient in English Language: TOEFL score of 750 or IELTS grade 7 or an equivalent International English Competency test
  • Obtained satisfactory mark (band) in the Malaysian Medical Specialist Pre-Entrance Examination (MedEx – Anaesthesiology).
  • At least one year experience in anaesthesiology at commencement of the course.
  • Satisfactory performance at the selection interview conducted by KPJ University College and KPJ Specialist Hospital.

PROGRAMME DETAILS

This is a full-time, 4 years clinical training programme in anaesthesiology and critical care. All candidates accepted into this programme will be appointed as Registrars (trainee Medical Officer) at one of the KPJ Specialist Hospital (the base hospital) throughout the course. Registrars will receive a monthly RM 5,000 cost-of-living allowance from the hospital. Besides undergoing training, registrars have to carry-out duties at the Emergency Department of the base hospital for a minimum of 48 hours per month.  During the 4 years training, candidates undergo a 3 to 6 monthly rotation at accredited KPJ Specialist Hospitals. At each hospital, candidate will perform clinical duties as a registrar at the Department of Anaesthesiology, supervised by a senior consultant. The hallmark of this training programme is “one-to-one” apprenticeship training, where each candidate will perform clinical duties with a senior anaesthesiology consultant. Candidates are also required to be part of the team of anaesthetists providing anaesthesiology services in the OR and ICU. The consultants provide close supervision and immediate feedback to candidates. Arrangements will be made to enable candidates to have the opportunities to attend academic programmes and clinical training at teaching hospitals of public universities and Ministry of Health hospitals, especially for subspecialty training not available in KPJ Specialist Hospital.

Candidates are also required to conduct research and the research-work must be submitted as a dissertation 6 months before the final Phase III examination. Candidates will sit for the end of Phase 1 Professional Examination and the final End of Phase 3 examination, conducted by National Conjoint Board of Anaesthesiology. After passing the final examination and fulfil all the training requirements, candidates will be awarded Master of Anaesthesiologyy and Critical Care, KPJ Healthcare University College.
